Prince Albert In a Van
On the way to the course today, a motorcade came through and all but shut down the site; it was Prince Albert of Monaca arriving at the regatta in a cushy van.
In the weeks leading up to the regatta, I was briefing competitors in the Remenham Cup about what to expect at Henley, and briefly mentioned that “one Princess or another will present your medals, and…” and was interrupted by the question “Princess? How about a prince?”
They got their wish; Prince Albert of Monaco will be presenting today. Besides being the son of Princess Grace, and thus the grandson of the great oarsman Jack Kelly of Boathouse Row/Kelly Drive fame, Prince Albert is a bit of an athlete himself, having competed in the bobsled at three Winter Olympics, so there you go. His mother Princess Grace presented the awards in 1981.
